I’ve been following the advice in this video, and for some reason taking a shower and brushing my teeth before mediation makes a huge difference. I feel much more comfortable and calm and it is easier to meditate.

Hello Colin, It is important that you listen to your own experiences and trust your own understanding. You are arriving at knowledge that many meditators, yogis and health practitioners have also reached. It is taught in Ayurveda, the health system of India, that showering/bathing and performing basic hygiene practice before meditation is recommended. The water element is purifying to the body and will also invigorate the body.
